My Journey Through James

James 4:4-6 MSG

You’re cheating on God. If all you want is your own way, flirting with the world every chance you get, you end up enemies of God and his way. And do you suppose God doesn’t care? The proverb has it that “he’s a fiercely jealous lover.” And what he gives in love is far better than anything else you’ll find. It’s common knowledge that “God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble.”

James 4:4-6 ERV

You people are not faithful to God! You should know that loving what the world has is the same as hating God. So anyone who wants to be friends with this evil world becomes God’s enemy.  Do you think the Scriptures mean nothing? The Scriptures say, “The Spirit God made to live in us wants us only for himself.” But the kindness God shows is greater. As the Scripture says, “God is against the proud, but he is kind to the humble.”

James 4:4-6 NLT

You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.  Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say,

“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”

Conviction 101 when I read these verses. I was like- “Okay James, can you be any more blunt?”  But these verse really did shift my perspective about my relationship with God and his grace. My relationship with God is the most important relationship in my life. James 4:4 correlates with Isaiah 54:5, ”For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer”, God is our husband and the one we should be faithful to before anyone else. I know that may take some maturity to understand, but we have to know that we are God’s brides. When we give our lives to God, we become his brides. We are the ones who are supposed to be faithful to him and his word. The second part of James 4:4 explains that if we are playing games- meaning following the world ways, willingly living in disobedience to God- then where is our loyalty to God?  As Christians we need to love what God loves and hate what he hates. But we catch ourselves going back and forth between God and the world. Yes, every day we make mistakes, and we are not perfect, but if we are living in sin aka living in the world, then we are not faithful to God. James 4:5 basically details how God is jealous for us. God wants all our attention; he wants to be placed before anything else in our life. He wants to be our Lord and Savior- meaning that he is guiding ALL parts of our life. James wants us to realize that nothing on this earth is as important as God’s love. No relationship, job, degree, or lifestyle can fill the void- that is meant for God to fill. All those things will leave us empty if we place them before God. James 4:6 explains how God gives grace to those who will bow down and put their pride aside and say, “Lord I need you because I am struggling. I want to live for you, but my flesh is weak.” The Lord knows our flesh is weak, so that’s our opportunity to cry out to him because we need God. We are brides of God and we are committing adultery if we flirt with the world. We have to leave our flesh and come to the altar and allow God to be the savior in our life.
